So yeah guys I'm finally back! I know it's been like over four months since I've made a post and I'm sorry for that. If there's anyone who still reads this blog, you now know that I haven't given up on blogging, it's just that with the start of my first year of art school at VCU I found it very difficult to keep up with the blog. Constant art projects and trying to get into the Fashion Design major meant that school had to come first.
But now I'm back and will definitely be doing more posts this summer and I will try to make up a plan or schedule so that I will still be able to post content during the school year as well. I also hope to do different things with this blog in the coming year, I want this blog to be a little more personal than it has been and I want you guys to get to know me better.
So with that in mind I thought I'd share with you some of my thoughts and experiences on my first year at VCU Arts!
First and foremost, Art is Hard, don't let anybody tell you different, haha! Many long, sleepless nights pouring over drawings and sculptures (which I am not very good at), questioning your abilities and how you even got into art school in the first place, and being stressed out of your mind. And even with all that I loved it! I knew I wouldn't have wanted to be doing anything else than the creative things I'd done that year. And while I handle stress relatively well, in any other major, with the same stress level and work load I would've been miserable. Art was hard and stressful but it was also really fun.
I learned how to make felt on a whim in one of my classes and got to draw in different areas of Richmond for another. I got to go to art galleries, and spend all night finishing many projects I'd procrastinated on (which I don't recommend doing, but which I probably will continue to do)! I wouldn't of changed this year for anything. Well maybe one part of it...
That would be the social side. I made friends, but not as many as I may have wanted. I've always thought I was too busy, or that others were too busy, and I hated feeling like I was bothering people by asking them for their time. I wasn't realizing that you can really make time for anything if you try hard enough. And being so focused on my work I definitely didn't make enough time for friends. I've also always been very independent, not the most social, some may even say, a loner. And while I liked the freedom that being alone allowed me, I came to realize towards the end of the year that while I am independent, I also get lonely. While before I thought those two things were mutually exclusive- you either liked being alone or you liked being around people- but now I realize they're not. Maybe if I had realized sooner, I may have had a better support network for when I was so stressed. It's something I'll have to work on more next year.
But enough with the sad, there were a lot of good times at VCU that definitely outweighed the bad times. I got into my major of Fashion Design and will be starting classes for that next semester! I'm so excited, but feel like a need to catch up with all things fashion related. Since the first year at VCU Arts is strictly just art in general, I didn't have much time to think about or do anything fashion related. I'm also thinking about minoring in Craft- specifically in their textiles and/or metalworking department- but that's really just a maybe at this point. I also realized that I really like working with sound! Mixing sounds and making soundscapes. My final project for one of my studio classes was a soundscape, and my teacher liked it so much that she suggested I take some Sound classes in the Kinetic Imaging department as electives since I was so interested in it, and I think I might do it!
All in all, my first year at VCU Arts was great, full of challenges and triumphs and I wouldn't change it for the world! And hopefully next year brings more creativity, more friends, and definitely more blogging and I hope you all will continue to read Little Velvet Owl and be a part of it all!
Sorry this was such as long, non-fashion, non-picture having post, but I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience at college and that you feel like you know me a little bit better. Tell me, do you like these more personal, writing heavy posts?
That's all for now, I hope to have a new, much more fashion related post up soon. Feel free to leave a comment, ask me anything, I'm always happy to talk. Anyways, have a great day guys and I'll talk to ya soon! :)
